#TravellrStories: Abdullah Gets a Taste of Solo Adventures in Europe
“What did I get myself into?” was what Mauritius-born Abdullah felt, as soon as he received his first email after booking a trip with Anywhr. Hearing about us from his sister and booking his vacation within an hour later, little did he know his adventures were just kicking-off.
As the 27-year-old calls us for a chat post-trip however, all the way from Germany where he’s been living for the past 4 years, we’re greeted with such enthusiasm to tell us all about his flurry of adventures.
From losing his personalised Travelogue even before boarding his flight, to getting lost at midnight, to walking 18 km in Destination X lost in thought, Abdullah found that he had to let go of his tendency to be in control. Solo travel was more about just going with the flow.
An avid traveller, Abdullah has explored many countries and visited friends all over the globe (even his siblings live in different continents!), learning to live like a local. But with Anywhr, it was different, he was completely alone. “This time, I wasn’t just discovering the destination as a local, I had to figure out how to be a local.”
His efforts didn't last long however when he chanced upon a pâtisserie and greeted a man seated there, before getting cosy with a book and slice of cake. The man instantly knew he wasn’t one of the locals, solely from the fact he did not hesitate to greet a stranger! But serendipity struck because they ended up chatting for 2 hours. Our easy-going Travellr couldn’t stop grinning as he told us about all his interactions with the locals, which turned out to be his favourite part of the trip. Well, it’s no wonder he chose our Experience-Themed trip!
TAKING HIMSELF TO DINNER
Pre-trip, Abdullah also anticipated his company would not be enough to keep himself entertained throughout the trip.
As a foodie, he made it his personal goal to try everything traditional he could get his hands on! From spreading the word about Anywhr to eager food cart vendors and savouring must-have desserts, he accomplished beefing up his repertoire on the cuisine in Destination X.
However, he wasn’t satisfied just yet. He still craved a full meal but knew this would involve sitting in a foreign restaurant. Alone. Although the nerves continued to creep in he realised it was now or never, and decided to take himself to dinner.
“Can I get a place for one?” Abdullah gave us a play-by-play of the scenario, in which he was met with a warm welcome from the waitress and got himself a proper traditional meal on his last day. Mission accomplished!
A Mission the Anywhr Team planned out for Abdullah succeeded in evoking the thrill-seeker in him. Determined to make the most out of his journey, he went back to the same location twice because he wasn’t content the first time around.
When his first visit to a particular neighbourhood in Destination X failed to match up to his expectations, it prompted him to ask locals what exactly was special about the place. He managed to make connections with locals while pleasing his inquisitive spirit.
(Abdullah also couldn’t hold back telling us that he’s still in contact with a local he met up with in a bar. What a win-win situation!)
He went back the next day, hiking up an hour for the most rewarding view (another Mission Accomplished!), which eventually blossomed into an 18km walk around the area. This solo stroll left Abdullah to his own thoughts and reflections which led to an active effort to better himself when he got back, and he told us he actually did.
After speaking to strangers constantly on his adventure, there was a new found positivity that exuded from his interactions post-trip. Back in Germany, he made conscious efforts to speak in German more in business meetings, a language he has been actively learning but tended to shy away from before his trip.

While wandering through Destination X, meeting new people and fulfilling Missions, Abdullah subconsciously rekindled his love for houses furnished with balconies. Hailing from Mauritius, he was always fond of Mother Nature and having easy access to the outdoors. Now back home in Germany, our ever-so inspired Travellr plans to get ready for a European summer in his new apartment equipped with a balcony.
Already jotting down his dates for his next personalised Anywhr vacation, we asked if he could sum his first Anywhr experience up in one sentence. He pondered for a moment before blurting out: The world is not that big after all, you just need to go on an adventure Anywhr!
