The Secret to Staying BFFs When Travelling Together
If you really want to get to know someone, travel with them, they say. But what they left out was that this also includes your BFFs. Yes, the ones that you thought you could get through everything and anything together.
It’s not a great thing when friendships start to unravel while you’re abroad in a foreign destination, supposedly the time and place to make unforgettable discoveries. Whether you’re travelling with just your best friend or with the clique of comrades that you call your ride or die, there’s something puzzling about how being around each other 24/7 evokes the little monster in each of us.
If you’re worried that your upcoming summer break travel plans will trigger unexpected friendship breakups, we’re here to put a stop to it! Anywhr reveals our secrets to getting rid of unpleasant experiences and keeping your sanity when you’re with your buddies on vacation.
SETTING GROUND RULES PRE-TRIP
Getting things out of the way in the pre-trip planning process is going to be your ticket to a fuss-free time. BUT it'll only work if everyone is honest with each other. Speak your truths, are there certain activities that you know will be a dealbreaker for you?
For instance, be open if you’re dying to tick off skydiving off your bucket list. Even if no one else is, you could carve out a time for you to get that checked off. A bonus is if your friends are supportive enough, they might even meet you at the landing. We all love the friends that hype us up no matter what!
Budget-wise, compare your expectations and find the reasonable cost for your dinners and accommodation. Find the middle ground and make decisions based on both of your best interests.
Here’s a pro-tip: Give each other a set number of vetoes to use when pre-planning, and work your way from there. Remember, compromise is key in any relationship!
Alternatively, you could leave the trip planning in our hands at Anywhr, and just let us know your travel penchants, be it checking out the latest gourmet trends in Destination X or your desire for adventure and finding the hidden gems in the city. That’s what Anywhr Travellrs Yiliang and Chun Yat did when we sent them somewhere in Central Europe!
Even if you’re travelling with vast opposites - say one of your BFFs is a vegan and another can’t go a day without eating meat, we’ll plan the trip taking into account everyone’s preferences!

LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG BEFORE FLYING
Here’s when things get real. Following the lead of our first tip, the trick is to let it all out. But this time, it’s all about what makes you tick. Prep your friend(s) for the worst you and this will make them aware of things to avoid – like waking you up before 8am if you’re just not a morning person, or using your mascara without your permission.
Best believe if you’re one for snoring incessantly and you keep this a secret from your friends, there’ll be nothing but bad memories to take back from your trip. We all know an insufficient amount of sleep on a trip is a major no-no. Reveal these tendencies so your friends will be ready with earplugs or just so they can make sure they always fall asleep before you.
CHECK IN WITH ONE ANOTHER
Every couple of hours or so on the trip, do a quick check-in with each other. Ensure that everyone is good with how the day is going. These quick touchpoints make for the perfect way to keep moods up and the sulky faces at bay.
For instance, if your legs are aching from standing around the same museum exhibit for too long and you’re too shy to speak up, these check-ins give you that little nudge you need to confess before those blisters form.
MAKE THE BEST OF EVERY SITUATION
Travelling in general comes with its own set of expectations. You may have planned everything to T, but it is inevitable that zero screw ups will occur. Let’s say all of you have been dying to head to Universal Studios in Osaka but it starts pouring like bonkers and the rides end up closed.
Instead of it spoiling everyone’s mood, search for alternatives you can do in the rainy weather, like Uber-ing to the other indoor attractions in the city, such as a museum trip or theatre show. Travel makes for the best time to ignite that sense of spontaneity! With Anywhr, we even equip your personalised Travelogue with a ton of suggestions for activities – whether rain or shine!

TAKE A BREAK
Before going on that adventure, it may feel like you can’t wait to spend every waking hour with your BFFs. Granted, if you’ve never spent 24/7 with each other prior, we suggest designating specific free time (or even a full day!) for you guys to explore by yourselves before reconvening for dinner.
This also works if you guys have way too different travelling styles that could cause you to be at your wits end mid-trip. Not everyone is into spending 5 hours shopping when they’re overseas, and at the same time, going on a 5-hour trek may not suit everyone’s fancy.
